Sean Green

Senior Research Scientist
Seattle, WA
As a first generation American, Sean has long had an interest in how our endeavors towards access affect a person's opportunities. At Princeton University he earned a BSE in Civil Engineering and Operations Research and was first introduced to programming in C and in Java. After graduating, he spent a number of years as a Java and database programmer in San Francisco, working for services firms that integrated companies' legacy brick-and-mortar operations with their burgeoning e-Commerce presences.

He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon, where his research focused on machine learning methods for decision support using data from the developing world, and he subsequently completed a postgraduate fellowship at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, where he published research on how machine learning and statistics could be used to determine cause of death in countries for which vital registration data is lacking.

After his postdoc he worked for a number of years at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a Program Officer in Special Initiatives, and after a brief stint as the Interim CEO of the Waste to Resource Fund-- a nonprofit based in Dhaka, Bangladesh-- he returned his primary focus to ML as a data scientist on the Innovation Delivery team in the Office of the Mayor of the City of Seattle, where he worked on data-driven methods to reduce systemic disparities for Black and Brown youth in the Seattle area. Since then he has worked at Amazon in a number of roles in which he has been able to apply machine learning algorithms to Big Data, and he is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Convoy, where he works with algorithms full time.
